License Requirements

West Virginia Respiratory Therapy CE Requirements

20 Hours every 2 years - Reported during Even-Numbered Year renewals

• Total Requirement: 20 contact hours of continuing education are required every 2-year accrual period. (Note: While you renew your license *every* year, you only report CEUs every *other* year).
• Accrual Period: CEUs must be earned between October 1st of an even-numbered year and September 30th of the next even-numbered year (e.g., Oct 1, 2024 – Sept 30, 2026).
• Live / Interactive Requirement: At least 10 hours (50%) must be obtained through 'Live' or 'Interactive' methods. The Board accepts Real-Time Interactive Webinars (where you can interact with the presenter) as meeting this 'Live' requirement.
• Self-Study Limit: A maximum of 10 hours (50%) can be obtained through self-study or non-traditional methods (e.g., pre-recorded videos, journal articles).
• Mandatory Topics: There are currently 0 specific mandatory course topics (e.g., no ethics or patient safety requirement) for Respiratory Therapists. (Do not confuse this with WV Nursing requirements).
• Approved Sponsors: Courses approved by the AARC (American Association for Respiratory Care) or the West Virginia Board of Respiratory Care (WVBORC) are accepted.
• Carry-Over: You may carry over up to 6 hours of excess CEUs to the next accrual period.

West Virginia License Renewal Process

1. Expiration Date: Licenses expire annually on December 31st.
2. Renewal Window: The online renewal portal typically opens on November 1st.
3. Reporting Schedule: - Odd Years (e.g., 2025): You renew your license and pay the fee, but generally do not report CEUs. - Even Years (e.g., 2026): You renew your license, pay the fee, AND must attest to/upload your 20 CEUs.
4. Online Portal: Renewal is completed through the WVBORC Online Portal (not CE Broker).
5. Fees: - Early Renewal (Nov 1 - Nov 30): ~$55.00 - Standard Renewal (Dec 1 - Dec 31): ~$65.00 - Reinstatement (After Dec 31): ~$200.00
6. Audit: The Board conducts random audits. You are encouraged to upload your certificates to the portal during renewal to safeguard against audit requests. Keep records for at least 3 years.
