Utah Respiratory Therapy CE Requirements

0 Hours every 2 years - No State CE requirement for active license renewal

• Total Requirement: The Utah Division of Professional Licensing (DOPL) currently requires 0 continuing education hours to renew a Respiratory Care Practitioner license.
• State vs. NBRC: While the state of Utah does not require CEUs for license renewal, most employers (hospitals) require you to maintain your NBRC Credential (CRT/RRT) as a condition of employment. The NBRC requires 30 hours every 5 years to remain active.
• Credential Status: Unlike some states, Utah does not currently mandate that you maintain an active NBRC credential to renew your state license. You technically can renew your state license even if your NBRC credential has lapsed, provided you pay the renewal fee and have no disciplinary issues.
• Reinstatement: If you allow your Utah license to expire, you may be required to submit evidence of professional competence (which often includes CEUs or retaking exams) to reinstate it, depending on how long it has been expired.

Utah License Renewal Process

1. Expiration Date: Licenses expire on September 30th of every even-numbered year (e.g., 2024, 2026).
2. Renewal Window: The renewal period typically opens 60 days prior to the expiration date. DOPL sends email notifications to the address on file.
3. Online Portal: Renewal is completed through the Utah DOPL Online Renewal System (dopl.utah.gov).
4. Fees: The renewal fee is approximately $52.00. (Fees are subject to change by DOPL).
5. Late Renewal: If you fail to renew by September 30th, your license expires immediately. There is a 30-day grace period to renew with a reinstatement fee, but you cannot legally practice while the license is expired.
