Texas Respiratory Therapy CE Requirements

24 Hours every 2 years - Total CE requirement for license renewal

• Total Requirement: 24 contact hours of acceptable continuing education are required every renewal period (biennium).
• Live/Traditional Hours: A minimum of 12 hours must be obtained through traditional methods, such as live lectures, seminars, workshops, or real-time interactive webinars.
• Online/Self-Study Hours: A maximum of 12 hours may be earned through non-traditional or self-directed study formats.
• Ethics Requirement: At least 2 hours of ethics education must be completed and are included in the total 24 hours.
• Human Trafficking Prevention: A Texas HHSC-approved human trafficking prevention course is required each renewal period.
• NBRC Certification: Licensees must maintain a current NBRC credential (CRT or RRT).

Texas License Renewal Process

1. Renewal Window: License renewal opens approximately 60–90 days before the expiration date.
2. Expiration Dates: Respiratory care licenses expire on either May 31st or November 30th.
3. Online Portal: Renewals are completed through the Texas Medical Board online licensing system.
4. Fees: Renewal fees generally range from $106 to $113 and are subject to change.
5. Fingerprinting: Fingerprinting may be required if not previously submitted.
6. Grace Period: There is no grace period. Practicing with an expired license is prohibited.

• CE Tracking: The Texas Medical Board uses CE Broker as its official continuing education tracking system.
• Audits: Licensees may be selected for random audits and must provide proof of completed CE hours.
• Record Retention: CE documentation should be retained for at least two years.
