South Dakota Respiratory Therapy CE Requirements

20 Hours every 2 years - Total CE requirement for license renewal

• Total Requirement: 20 contact hours of continuing education are required every renewal period (biennium).
• Online/Self-Study: South Dakota does not limit the number of hours taken through online or home-study courses. You may complete all 20 hours via approved online methods.
• Approved Sponsors: CEUs must be obtained from a program sponsored by the American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC) or an in-service program conducted by a licensed hospital or related institution.
• Mandatory Topics: There are currently 0 specific mandatory course topics (e.g., no specific ethics or patient safety requirement). Courses must simply be related to the practice of respiratory care and designed to enhance your knowledge and skills.

South Dakota License Renewal Process

1. Expiration Date: Licenses expire on December 31st of every even-numbered year (e.g., 2024, 2026).
2. Renewal Window: The renewal period opens 90 days prior to the expiration date (approx. October 1st).
3. Online Portal: Renewal is completed through the South Dakota Board of Medical and Osteopathic Examiners (SDBMOE) online portal (MySD Account).
4. Fees: The renewal fee is approximately $60.00.
5. Audit: The Board conducts random audits. You must retain your CE certificates for at least 4 years.
6. Lapsed License: Failure to renew by December 31st results in automatic forfeiture of the license. You cannot practice until the license is reinstated.
