New York Respiratory Therapy CE Requirements

30 Hours every 3 years - Total CE requirement for license renewal

• Total Requirement: 30 contact hours of continuing education are required every 3-year registration period. (Note: Respiratory Therapy Technicians (RTTs) require 24 hours).
• Formal vs. Informal Split: New York distinguishes between 'Formal' and 'Informal' learning rather than just 'Live' vs. 'Online'. - Formal Hours (Min 15): At least 15 hours must be 'Formal.' This includes live courses, webinars, and approved distance learning courses offered by a NYSED-approved sponsor (e.g., AARC approved). - Informal Hours (Max 15): No more than 15 hours may be 'Informal' self-study (e.g., reading articles, unproctored video courses).
• Mandatory Infection Control: You must complete a NYSED-approved course in Infection Control every 4 years. (Note: Because the license cycle is 3 years and this requirement is 4 years, the dates will not always align).
• Child Abuse Reporting: A one-time 2-hour course in the Identification and Reporting of Child Abuse and Maltreatment is required for initial licensure.
• Approved Sponsors: Courses must be taken from a sponsor approved by the New York State Education Department (NYSED). AARC-approved courses are generally accepted as 'Formal' if they meet the sponsor criteria.

New York License Renewal Process

1. Expiration Date: Licenses expire every 3 years on the last day of the month in which the license was originally issued. (Check your registration certificate for your specific triennial cycle).
2. Renewal Window: Renewal notices are mailed approximately 4 months before expiration.
3. Online Portal: Renewal is completed through the NYSED Office of the Professions online renewal system.
4. Fees: The renewal fee is approximately $237.00 for Respiratory Therapists ($207 registration + $30 CE fee) and $154.00 for Technicians.
5. Audit: You are not required to send certificates with your renewal, but you must retain them for 6 years in case of an audit. The Board conducts random audits.
6. First Renewal Exemption: You are exempt from continuing education requirements for your first 3-year registration period following initial licensure.
