New Jersey Respiratory Therapy CE Requirements

30 Hours every 2 years - Total CE requirement for license renewal

• Total Requirement: 30 contact hours of acceptable continuing education are required every renewal period (biennium).
• Online/Self-Study: New Jersey does not limit the number of hours taken through online or distance learning courses. You may technically complete all 30 hours via approved online methods (e.g., AARC approved webcasts).
• Mandatory Topics: You must complete the following specific topics within your 30 hours: - 1 Hour in Infection Control. - 1 Hour in Patient Safety / Medical Errors. - 1 Hour in Ethics.
• Clinical Focus: At least 20 hours must be directly related to clinical respiratory care practices. The remaining hours can be in other health-related fields.
• Approved Sponsors: Courses must be approved by the AARC (American Association for Respiratory Care) or the New Jersey Society for Respiratory Care.
• Carry-Over: You may carry over a maximum of 5 surplus credits to the next renewal period, provided those extra credits were earned within the last 12 months of the current cycle.

New Jersey License Renewal Process

1. Expiration Date: Licenses expire on March 31st of every odd-numbered year (e.g., 2025, 2027).
2. Renewal Window: The Board sends renewal notices at least 60 days prior to the expiration date.
3. Online Portal: Renewal is completed through the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs (MyLicense) online portal.
4. Fees: The standard renewal fee is approximately $160.00. (Note: Fees were temporarily waived in 2022-2023, but standard fees apply for future cycles).
5. Audit: The Board conducts random audits. You must retain your CE certificates for at least two full biennial periods (approx. 4-5 years) to prove compliance if selected.
6. Late Renewal: If you miss the March 31st deadline, you may have a 30-day grace period to renew with a late fee. After that, the license may be suspended.
