Montana Respiratory Therapy CE Requirements

12 Hours every 1 year - Total CE requirement for license renewal

Major Rule Change (Effective June 2024): The Montana Board has changed the CE requirement from a biennial (24 hours every 2 years) cycle to an annual cycle. You must now complete 12 contact hours every year.
Total Requirement: 12 contact hours of continuing education are required annually, due by the May 1st renewal deadline.
Live/Traditional Hours: There is currently no mandate for a specific number of live or in-person hours. You may complete your hours through approved online courses, webinars, or self-study.
Mandatory Topics: There are currently 0 mandatory specific course topics (e.g., no specific ethics or patient safety requirement) for standard renewal.
Content Relevance: CE activities must be germane to the profession of respiratory care and contribute to the licensee's professional knowledge and competence.
Inactive Status: The Board has eliminated the Inactive license status. You must maintain an Active license (meeting all CE requirements) or allow your license to terminate.

Montana License Renewal Process

Expiration Date: Licenses expire annually on May 1st.
Renewal Window: The renewal period typically opens in early March (March 3rd).
Online Portal: Renewal is completed through the Montana Department of Labor & Industry (DLI) online portal (eBiz).
Fees: The standard annual renewal fee is approximately $75.00 - $100.00. (Fees are subject to Board adjustments).
Late Renewal: Renewals submitted after May 1st are subject to a 100% late penalty fee (doubling the cost). The late renewal window typically closes on June 15th/16th.
Audit: The Board conducts random audits. You must retain your CE certificates for at least one year following the reporting period.
Transition Rule: For audits conducted during the transition to the new annual system, staff may accept qualifying CE under either the previous (24/2 years) or current (12/1 year) requirement.
