Minnesota Respiratory Therapy CE Requirements

24 Hours every 2 years - Total CE requirement for license renewal

• Total Requirement: 24 contact hours of board-approved continuing education are required every 2-year renewal period.
• Online/Self-Study: Minnesota does not limit the number of hours taken through online or distance learning courses. You may complete all 24 hours via approved online methods (e.g., AARC approved webcasts or self-paced courses).
• Mandatory Topics: There are currently 0 specific mandatory course topics (e.g., no ethics or patient safety requirement) for standard renewal.
• Management/Personal Growth Limit: You may apply a maximum of 8 hours combined in the areas of management, risk management, personal growth, or educational techniques. The remaining 16 hours should be directly related to clinical respiratory therapy.
• Approved Sponsors: Courses must be approved by the AARC (American Association for Respiratory Care), the Minnesota Society for Respiratory Care, or be sponsored by an accredited university/medical school.
• Credentialing Exam: You may claim 12 hours of credit for passing a specialty credentialing examination (e.g., NPS, ACCS) from the NBRC during the renewal period.

Minnesota License Renewal Process

1. Expiration Date: Licenses typically expire on June 30th or the last day of the licensee's birth month, depending on when the license was originally issued. (Check your specific license card). The cycle is 2 years.
2. Cycle Start: For new licensees, the 2-year CE cycle technically commences on July 1st immediately following the date of initial licensure.
3. Renewal Window: Renewal typically opens 2 months prior to the expiration date (e.g., May 1st for a June 30th deadline).
4. Online Portal: Renewal is completed through the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice (MBMP) online services portal.
5. Fees: The standard renewal fee is $90.00.
6. Late Renewal: Failure to renew by the expiration date may result in license cancellation. There is no grace period allowing practice with an expired license.
7. Audit: The Board conducts random audits. You must retain your CE certificates for at least 3 years.
