Maryland Respiratory Therapy CE Requirements

16 Hours every 2 years - Total CE requirement for license renewal

• Total Requirement: 16 contact hours of continuing education are required every renewal period (biennium).
• Online/Self-Study: Maryland does not limit the number of hours taken through online or home-study courses. You may complete all 16 hours via approved online methods (e.g., AARC approved webcasts or self-paced courses).
• Mandatory Topics: - Implicit Bias Training: Required for your *first* renewal after April 1, 2022. This is a one-time attestation. The course must be approved by the Cultural and Linguistic Health Care Professional Competency Program. - Recurring Topics: There are currently 0 other recurring mandatory topics (e.g., no specific ethics or patient safety requirement) for standard renewal.
• Approved Sponsors: Courses must be 'Category I' or approved by the AARC (American Association for Respiratory Care) or MedChi (The Maryland State Medical Society).
• First Renewal Exception: If this is your first renewal after initial licensure, you are exempt from the continuing education requirements for that period.

Maryland License Renewal Process

1. Expiration Date: Licenses expire on May 30th of every even-numbered year (e.g., 2024, 2026).
2. Renewal Window: The renewal period typically opens on April 1st of the renewal year.
3. Online Portal: Renewal is completed through the Maryland Board of Physicians online portal.
4. Fees: The standard renewal fee is approximately $150.00 - $186.00. (Fees are subject to Board adjustments).
5. No Late Renewal: Maryland has a strict deadline. There is no grace period or late renewal window. If you fail to renew by 11:59 PM on May 30th, your license is terminated, and you must apply for Reinstatement (which requires a new criminal background check and higher fees).
6. Audit: The Board conducts random audits. You must retain your CE certificates for at least 3 years in case of an audit.
