Kentucky Respiratory Therapy CE Requirements

24 Hours every 2 years - Total CE requirement for license renewal

• Total Requirement: 24 contact hours of acceptable continuing education are required every renewal period (biennium).
• Online/Self-Study: Kentucky does not limit the number of hours taken through online or home-study courses. You may complete all 24 hours via approved online methods.
• Mandatory Topics: - Ethics: You must complete at least 1 hour in or relevant to ethics in the field of respiratory care (per 201 KAR 29:050). - *Note:* Some older third-party guides list '0 mandatory topics,' but recent administrative regulations explicitly include this ethics requirement.
• Approved Sponsors: Courses must be approved by the AARC or the Kentucky Board of Respiratory Care (KBRC). The Board highly recommends AARC-approved courses as the standard for compliance.
• Relevant Content: All units must be in or relevant to the field of respiratory care (e.g., clinical practice, education, research, or administration).

Kentucky License Renewal Process

1. Expiration Date: Licenses expire on January 30th of every even-numbered year (e.g., 2024, 2026).
2. Renewal Window: The renewal period typically opens on November 1st of the preceding odd-numbered year.
3. Online Portal: Renewal is completed through the KBRC Online Portal.
4. Fees: The standard renewal fee is $150.00.
5. Audit: The Board conducts random audits of approximately 15% of licensees. You must retain your CE documentation for at least 3 years from the end of the certification period.
6. Documentation: If audited, you must submit copies of certificates that include the course name, date, and approval number (e.g., AARC course number).
