Iowa Respiratory Therapy CE Requirements

24 Hours every 2 years - Total CE requirement for license renewal

• Total Requirement: 24 contact hours of acceptable continuing education are required every renewal period.
• Traditional / Live Hours: A minimum of 12 hours must be obtained through traditional education. This includes in-person conferences or real-time interactive webinars where you can communicate with the presenter.
• Non-Traditional / Self-Study: A maximum of 12 hours can be obtained through non-traditional methods, such as recorded webinars or online self-paced courses.
• Mandatory Reporter Training: If you regularly examine, attend, counsel, or treat children or dependent adults, you must complete the Iowa DHHS Mandatory Reporter Training. This is in addition to your standard clinical CEUs (Child Abuse: 2 hrs; Dependent Adult Abuse: 2 hrs).
• Supplemental Topics: A maximum of 6 hours may be claimed for supplemental topics such as management, ethics, or record-keeping. The remaining hours must be clinical in nature.

Iowa License Renewal Process

1. Expiration Date: Licenses expire on March 31st of every even-numbered year (e.g., 2024, 2026).
2. Renewal Window: The renewal period typically opens on January 31st of the renewal year.
3. Online Portal: Renewal is completed through the Iowa Department of Inspections, Appeals, & Licensing (DIAL) online portal.
4. Fees: The standard renewal fee is $75.00.
5. Late Renewal: A late fee of $60.00 is assessed if you fail to renew by March 31st, plus the standard renewal fee.
6. Grace Period: There is a 30-day grace period after the March 31st expiration where you can renew with a late fee. After this period, the license becomes inactive.
