License Requirements

Alaska Respiratory Therapy CE Requirements

No State Board Requirements. You must follow NBRC Credential Maintenance Program (CMP).

• State Status: Alaska is currently an unregulated state for Respiratory Care. There is no state license to renew and no state-mandated CEU submission.
• Employer Standard: While the state does not require a license, virtually all Alaska employers require you to hold and maintain an active CRT or RRT credential from the NBRC (National Board for Respiratory Care).
• NBRC Requirement: To maintain your credential, you must participate in the Credential Maintenance Program (CMP), which requires 30 CEUs every 5 years.
• Quarterly Assessments: Alternatively, you can take NBRC quarterly assessments to waive some or all of your CEU requirements.
• Topic Requirements: There are 0 state-mandated topics (e.g., no state ethics or human trafficking courses required). You typically only need to meet the NBRC's broad definition of respiratory-related education.

Alaska License Renewal Process

1. No State Renewal: You do not need to submit an application or fee to the Alaska State Medical Board or any state agency.
2. Credential Verification: Employers will verify your status directly through the NBRC.
3. Maintenance Fee: You must pay the annual maintenance fee to the NBRC ($25/year) to keep your credential active.
4. Reinstatement: If you let your NBRC credential expire, you cannot simply renew it; you may be required to retake the national board examinations to regain your ability to work in Alaska.
