Alabama Respiratory Therapy CE Requirements

24 Hours every 2 years - Total CE requirement for license renewal

• Total Requirement: 24 contact hours of acceptable continuing education are required every renewal period.
• Traditional / Live Hours: You must complete at least 12 hours of traditional education. This includes classroom lectures, seminars, workshops, or real-time interactive webinars where you can communicate with the presenter.
• Non-Traditional / Self-Study: A maximum of 12 hours can be obtained through non-traditional methods, such as recorded webinars, online self-paced courses, or journal studies.
• Mandatory Courses: Currently, Alabama has 0 mandatory specific course topics (e.g., no specific ethics or medical error requirement) for standard renewal. The focus is on the method of delivery (Live vs. Self-Study).
• Advanced Life Support: No more than 4 hours total can be claimed for initial or renewal certification in ACLS, PALS, or NRP.
• Preceptorship: Up to 4 hours can be claimed for clinical preceptorship (serving as a clinical instructor), where 24 hours of supervision equals 1 CEU.

Alabama License Renewal Process

1. Expiration Date: Licenses expire on October 31st of every odd-numbered year (e.g., 2025, 2027).
2. Renewal Window: The renewal period typically opens in early September of the expiring year.
3. CE Broker: Alabama mandates the use of CE Broker to track and report your hours. You must have a compliant status in CE Broker to renew your license.
4. Fees: The standard renewal fee is $125.00.
5. Late Renewal: There is a late renewal window from November 1st to December 30th, which incurs a $75.00 late fee (Total: $200.00).
6. Lapsed License: If you do not renew by December 30th, your license lapses. Reinstatement requires a $200 fee plus back-owed renewal fees and proof of CEUs.
