Michigan Respiratory Therapy CE Requirements

0 Hours every 3 years - No general CE requirement, but specific mandates apply

• Total Requirement: The State of Michigan does not currently require general Continuing Education (CE) hours for Respiratory Therapist license renewal. However, you must meet the Implicit Bias and Human Trafficking requirements described below.
• State vs. NBRC: While the state requirement is zero, most employers require you to maintain your NBRC Credential, which requires 30 hours every 5 years. Losing your NBRC credential often leads to loss of employment.
• Implicit Bias Training: You must complete 1 hour of Implicit Bias training for each year of your license cycle. Since Michigan RT licenses are now on a 3-year cycle, you need 3 hours total per renewal. This training must be interactive (Live Webinar or In-Person); static recordings do not count.
• Human Trafficking: You must complete a one-time training on identifying victims of Human Trafficking. If you have completed this once, you do not need to repeat it.
• Pain Management: Unlike Michigan nurses or physicians, Respiratory Therapists currently have 0 mandatory hours in Pain Management.

Michigan License Renewal Process

1. Expiration Date: Licenses expire every 3 years. The specific expiration date is typically based on your Issue Date, not a fixed calendar date like Dec 31st. Check your license card for your specific deadline.
2. Renewal Window: Renewal typically opens 90 days prior to your expiration date. Notices are sent by mail or email.
3. Online Portal: Renewal is completed through the MiPLUS (Michigan Professional Licensing User System) portal.
4. Fees: The standard 3-year renewal fee is approximately $248.10. (Fees are subject to change).
5. Audit: The Department conducts random audits. Since there are no general CEUs, they primarily audit for Implicit Bias and Human Trafficking compliance. Keep these certificates for at least 4 years.
